Bike Build: Single Speed Surly Cross Check

We built up this Surly Cross Check for a commute from Wembley to Dianella. Cyclocross bikes make great commuters with their long wheelbase and relaxed geometry. This 50cm (54cm horiz top tube) frame will suit a rider from around 5'6" - 5'10" depending on inseam measurement.

As you can see in this shot, the Cross Check has horizontal dropouts and a derailleur hander so it is easily converted from geared to singlespeed. It also has rack and fender mounts if you'd like to add a few accessories.
We used a Ritchey 'Classic' stem and seatpost for this build to contrast against the gloss black of the frame. The Salsa Cowbell 2 bars are cost effective cross-bars coming in under $100 and being a shallow drop and short reach, they suited this buyer's riding style.
The Soma Fabrications Ergo 'Campy' style brake levers have a great hood feel and a crisp action. Salsa cork bar tape will keep things nice and plush on the drops.
We finished the build off with Velovity Deep V rims, Surly and Velocity hubs, a San Marco Regal saddle, old Exage cranks and Specialized Roubaix Elite 700x25C tyres. And of course a Liberty Bikes sticker!

Expect a similar build to set you back between $2500-$3000 depending on specific parts. Frame only would set you back $649.00
