Look what the workshop did...

This is Tom's 58cm Specialized Secteur Expert Disc. According to the interwebs, disc brake road bikes are the second coming of the messiah (or something like that). I dunno but this one is pretty cool and it stops on a dime. Something to consider for the clydesdales out there.

Race Report: Dusk til Dawn 12hr

Well its been run and won for another year, one of the biggest races on the calendar and unofficial season wind up, the Dusk til Dawn 12hr at Langford Park, Jarrahdale.

What an amazing night, the first and second laps were 'lit up' by an early evening thunderstorm which provided enough rain to keep the track from getting too dusty until fairly late into the event. After about 3 hours or so though the weather cleared, the wind dropped off and conditions were perfect for a ride through the night.

Our 'sponsors tent' was inhabited by an eclectic mix of racers. From the 'fastest lap of the night' Reece Tucknott and his powerful 4 man team from Wembley Cycles who posted the most laps on the night and owned the 7 fastest laps for the whole evening, to Solo grinders Jamie Burton and Dave Whiteway. We also had the Trustec team of the Beck's plus Mikey who took out 2nd place in mixed quads and infected as all with their boundless enthusiasm and energy even at 3 in the morning and the Wembley Cycles employees team of Mitch, Rex and Theo. The atmosphere around the tent was great all night long so thanks to you all.

The 13km course was a good mixture of distance, technical single track and had a rather nasty climb just a few km's from the end that I found myself dreading for most of each lap. As is typical of Langford park, the single track was mostly smooth and fast flowing which put a smile on my face, even early Sunday morning. There was one particularly tight and bumpy part just after a fire road section that did have me using some potty mouth as I tried to squeeze my 710mm handlebars between the trees.

My choice of the Niner SIR9 hartail 29er was perfect for the Dusk til Dawn's fast track. The excellent handling in quicker sections and 'power to the ground' efficiency matched to Niner's compliant steel frame to make for a great endurance race MTB.

I'd like to thank Dirtworks Australia, Niner's Australian distributor for helping us out and allowing us to supply this year's winners of Men's and Women's solo with a Niner MCR9 and SIR9 respectivly. Congratulations to Mel and Jason!

Also well done and thankyou to the organising committee, especially Ash and Nathan for all their hard work over the last couple of months and on the night. The whole night seemed to run seamlessly although I'm sure from their perspective it was probably less calm. This is a great event and Liberty Bikes is proud to be associated with one of WA's great MTB races.

Bike Build: Niner Bikes MCR9

When a bike shop owner decides he needs (wants) a new bike you can be sure budget wont be the primary concern. Dave had an MCR9 before he opened Liberty Bikes. Now that we have added Niner Bikes to the stable of brands we sell, he thought it was the perfect opportunity to get back on board. It also gave us the chance to try out a few new items for 2013.

Cinelli Gazzetta Della Strada

Looking for something a little different for those cruizes around the river on a Sunday morning? Maybe you're looking for something to commute to work on. Looking for something a little different, a bike that is both beautiful and functional?

Niner Bikes springs the RIP 9 RDO on an unsuspecting public.

Wow! Is this going to be the best looking bike of 2013? Someone's going to have to pull something outa the hat to beat the RIP 9 RDO from Niner Bikes. As with the Jet 9 range the RDO version of the RIP 9 gets more travel that its alloy namesake. With 125mm of CVA suspension Niner call this bike their Quiver Killer. If ever there was 'one bike to rule them all' then this may be it.

Ritchey P-29's Returning in October

These were so popular last time around that 17" and 19" frames sold out within days. We have just heard from Dirtworks, Australian distributors of Ritchey components and frames that these sizes will be back in stock in October 2012!  A frame only price of $1099.00 make these extremely competitive with other steel frames on the market. The sliding dropouts give you the versatility of either geared or single speed setup with out the complications of eccentric BB's or chain tensioners.

Numbers are extremely limited so a pre-order will be required to avoid disappointment. Expect delivery in the first weeks of October!!

Of course if you require a 15" or 21" frame then we can get you one of those straight away! Just give us a call on (08) 9375 1340 or drop into the shop to organise the fine details.

Rocky Mountain Bicycles 2013: Vertex 970 RSL

A Shimano XT/XTR spec'd carbon hardtail for under $4500!

The Vertex bikes from Rocky Mountain Bicycles was our most popular range for 2012. Now RMB have stepped it up with their 2013 models absolutely killing it on price, spec and weight.

The Vertex 970 RSL shares the same frame as the uber racey Vertex 999 RSL and comes spec'd with a quality range of Shimano drivetrain and brake parts. The Hi-mod smoothwall carbon frame utilises the latest technology to build a frame lighter than many of its competitors. The geometry has been finetuned to give the rider almost "26 inch" handling through shortened top tube and chainstays and 70.25 degree headtube angle to provide a nice balance of stability and agility.

Rear derailleur is the venerable Shimano XTR 980 10 speed linked to the all new 2013 SLX 670 front mech. Shimano HG 74 and HG81 chain and 11-36 tooth cassette keep things smooth and quiet while a beautiful, black Race Face Turbine crankset completes the drivetrain with 38/24 gearing.

Braking is handled by Shimano XT 780 series hydraulic disc brakes with a 180mm rotor up front and a 160mm out back. Here's a separate review from cyclingnews.com.

Suspension is sorted with a Rock Shox SID RL 29 100mm with Motion Control dampening, turn key lockout and a tapered steerer.

The wheels are made for RMB by Sun Ringle' under the name Inferno and they have supplied a reasonably light but still strong wheelset as you would expect from such a great company. Hubs are Wheeltech Japanese made sealed bearing internals And utilise the latest in axle tech with a QR15 up front and a 142x12 axle in the rear.

Race Face Turbine bar and stem finish up the cockpit and a RMB seatpost and saddle make up the perch. Liberty Bikes will happily customise the fine details like tyre, saddle and grip choice for each customer.

We are taking pre orders now for delivery very soon on the entire range of Vertex carbon hardtails. RRP is only $4499 for this race-ready beast or all-day adventurer.

Drop us a line on (08) 9375 1340 to secure yours.

Liberty Bikes will be holding an Introduction to Bicycle Maintenance class from 7pm. This is aimed at beginner and experienced riders who would like to know how best to look after their pride and joy. Instruction will focus more on how to care for your bike so you are less likely to have to fix it. Language will be kept to layman's terms and we will try not to be too 'bike nerdy'.

- how to change a flat tyre
- maintaining proper tyre pressure
- basic drivetrain care
- basic brake care
- basic safety checks
- basic cockpit setup
- saddle positioning

We will also be happy to answer any specific questions you might have.

The class is free and a 10% discount* will be offered to all participants for purchases made on the night.

Class size is limited to 10 to keep things nice and personal. Please call the shop on 9375 1340 or email info@libertybikes.com.au to secure your place.

Bike Build: Niner AIR9 Carbon

This one was fun, well more fun than the others. What a beautiful frame, glossy licorice black colour, bright red accents and understated Niner logo on the down tube.
We didn't want to go all out with this build, we managed to restrain ourselves from building a sub 10kg bike just for the sake of it. The brief was to build a light race weapon that can still be ridden on the trails weekend after weekend. We also wanted to keep the budget under $6k for this medium frame.

Bike Build: Niner EMD9 Test Bike

This is the last addition to the test fleet for a little while, or at least until 2013 Rocky Mountains start popping up. Its a medium Niner EMD9 frame with a (mostly) 2013 Shimano SLX build kit and the new Shimano MT66 29er wheelset.
The EMD9 frame is Niner's least expensive, at $699 for frame and seat post collar you get a pretty sweet rig. It shares most of its design cues with the lighter AIR9 alloy frame. Hydroformed tubing allows Niner to create a stronger frame with less material. Here's the weight of the completed bike with pedals...
That's pretty good for a full build that retails for $2799.00 with the Fox F29 RLC Kashima Coat fork.

New Trading Hours

We are giving some new trading hours a go. If you need us after work we will now be open until 7pm Tuesday - Friday. Ben our mechanic finishes at 5pm but Dave will be on hand to if you need basic servicing or repairs done or just want to do a little shopping. (Hell, just want to drop in with a 6 pack of beer and have a chat? That's fine too!)

Test Fleet Ready to Roll

Our Test Fleet is almost fully assembled, just one more bike to finish off and we're there.
This Large Niner JET9 demo bike is built and ready to test. Here are some highlights of the build:

Large Niner JET9 frame (anodised black) w/ Fox RP23 shock 80mm travel
DT Swiss XMM 100mm travel fork w/ lockout
SRAM X-9 1x10 drivetrain (32x11-36)
E-Thirteen XCX crankset and chain guide
Sun Ringle Equalizer Rims w/ DT Swiss 340 Classic hubs
Formula R1 disc brakes
Ritchey Pro seatpost, stem and flat handlebar

She weighs in at a respectable 12.4kg for a rather durable build (including heavy duty tubes). Think of the possibilities if you 'weight weenied' it!

We are giving this beast to Adrian Middleton from Delta BA Racing to be put through it's paces before being unleashed on the public next weekend.

Use of our Test Fleet comes at a small cost which can be transferred as a deposit on a new bike when you place an order (good for a period of 6 months).
Fee structure as follows:

24 hours -                $75.00
48 hours -                $120.00
Each day after -       $60.00
7 days -                    $360.00

You will need to provide a valid driver's license and credit card before a demo bike will be released to you. We will provide flat MTB pedals free of charge if you do not have any, however you can supply your own if you have clipless pedals.

To book a test ride call the shop on (08) 93751340 or email info@libertybikes.com.au to confirm availability.

Other bikes available to test include:
(Small) Rocky Mountain Vertex 950
(Medium) Rocky Mountain Element 70 MSL
(Medium) Niner EMD9 (2013 SLX build kit)
(54cm) Specialized Tarmac Pro SL4 (Ultegra Di2)

Buy Dave's Bike

A few months ago we built up a 2011 Rocky Mountain Element 30 with a bunch of 26" specific parts Dave had lying around and some new parts we had swapped out of customer bikes along the way. Well now its time to sell this beauty and some of these parts will be sorely missed (especially the fork and wheels). Dave's looking for $2500 for this mix of new and near new parts on one of the most legendary XC frames ever contructed.

Here is a link to our Bike-Exchange advert.

There are some highlights and pictures after the break.

Pricing for the 2013 Rocky Mountain Element 29 Carbon range has been released. Stock is extremely limited so we a taking pre-orders now! If these are half as popular (and likely they will be twice as popluar) as the carbon Vertex 29ers were, then they will sell out fast.

Niner Bikes coming to Liberty Bikes in July.

Niner Bikes do only one thing and they do it well. Their entire range consists of 29ers, from steel, alloy and carbon frame hardtails to alloy and carbon dual suspension weapons. From precision XC race bikes to all-out Freeride beasts, Niner have it dialled.

Niner make their steel frames from Reynolds 853 tubing to supply a superior ride quality at low weight penalty. The 2012 SIR9 (stands for 'Steel Is Real') has many of the features of a carbon 29er. It accepts a suspension fork with a tapered steerer and has spacing for a 142x12 rear axle which add to the overall stiffness of the completed bike. The real advantage of the SIR9 is its versatility, with the Niner 'Bio-centric' bottom bracket, the bike can be run as a single speed or with gears. The 2012 SIR 9 will be available sometime in September and we are taking pre-orders, however there are a few deals on 2011 SIR9's around so get in touch with us to find out sizes and colour availability. They still have the 'Bio-centric' BB but can't accept tapered steerers and have 135mm quick release spacing for the rear axle.

Bike Build: Single Speed Surly Cross Check

We built up this Surly Cross Check for a commute from Wembley to Dianella. Cyclocross bikes make great commuters with their long wheelbase and relaxed geometry. This 50cm (54cm horiz top tube) frame will suit a rider from around 5'6" - 5'10" depending on inseam measurement.

Rocky Mountain release details of Element 29 RSL carbon bikes for 2013

Pic: RMB Element 970 RSL

Today Rocky Mountain Bicycles released details on the all new Element 29r RSL range. All RSL frames are carbon constructed with 95mm of rear travel using RMB's 'Smoothlink' design. These have been billed as all out race beasts and the weight of and extra large 970RSL is a shade over 12kg without pedals and without tubeless. (source bikerumor.com)
We don't have pricing yet and availability wont be until later in the year. Needless to say we can hardly contain our excitment.

Pic: RMB Element 999RSL

Topping the range this year is a bike we think can rival the Specialized S-Works Epic for top spot amongst serious racers. The Element 999RSL weighs in at a claimed 10.1kg for a medium frame without pedals. Rumours are that it will come in somewhere around the $9k mark making it very competitive with other high end race bikes.

Something a little different is the Element 970 BC Edition. With a stealth black fit out and Talas Fork (120mm-95mm) and Reverb dropper seatpost, this bike was designed with the unique racing found on Vancouver's 'North Shore'. That said, a bike like this, with 120mm front travel would eat the Kalamunda Circuit alive! We don't have pricing or weight for this bike yet but expect it to be a little more portly than the 970RSL.

Stay tuned as more info leaks out on the Element 29 RSL and other goodies to come in the near future.

Also we hare happy to try and source any brand that you desire for any of the components.Your imagination is the only limit. We don't mind if you source the parts yourself either.

The process costs $70 per wheel and includes a consultation process where your requirements are matched up to possible solutions. Then the work really gets going once all the components are sourced (if we don't already have them in stock) and Ben hand builds each wheel. This price also includes a discount on a spoke retension after 2 weeks of $10.00 (usually costs $25.00 down to $15.00)

Coming Soon: Ellsworth Handcrafted Mountainbikes

Exciting news!! Liberty Bikes will soon take delivery of our first Ellsworth dual suspension 29er mountainbikes.

Based in California, all Ellsworth Bikes are made in the USA. The Evolution (pic above) is a 120mm front and rear travel XC/trail bike with Ellsworth's celebrated ICT suspension platform.

Here's what Ellsworth have to say about ICT:

"Internationally patented and quantifiably the most energy-efficient suspension design in the World, ICT tuned four-bar linkage design provides a true zero-energy loss to suspension function. By aligning the instant center on the chain torque line and continually tracking the chain torque throughout the range of travel, ICT is accomplished without the need of a lockout. This keeps the suspension fully active and always on, resulting in increased traction and control, and reduced rider fatigue."

Ritchey P-29 coming to Liberty Bikes May 2012

They have finally given us an ETA! We have access to a limited number of these beautiful Ritchey P-29 frames coming in May 2012.
If you are interested you will have to let us know as soon as possible so we can secure one in the size you would like. (check out the geomerty chart at the bottom of the post)

RRP for these very exclusive frames is only $1099.00

Here's what Dirtworks, Australian distributors for Ritchey have to say about the P-29 as well as the geomerty:

The return of the legendary Ritchey Mountain Bike. Tom
Ritchey applied 38 years of racing, designing and building
steel mountain bikes into a new model-the P-29er.
Like any Ritchey, this bike is born to go fast without
sacrificing comfort or durability. Heat-treated, triple-butted
Ritchey Logic II tubing in our own unique butting profiles
results in a frame that balances rough trail compliance with
sprint-winning stiffness.
The 29er-specific geometry was defined by the best way we
know: countless hours of saddle time under Tom Ritchey,
World Cup legend Thomas Frischknect and other racers.
The result: nimble handling that captures the benefits of the
big wheels, stable but not sluggish, equally at home on allday
epics or tight, technical singletrack race courses.
The instantly-recognizable tri-color fade is a tribute to the
classic Ritchey P-series racing mountain bike.

Race Report: Rhianna Farrell Takes Out 4hr.

                                                                                                              Photo: Adrian Middleton

Liberty Bikes / Rocky Mountain Bicycles rider Rhianna Farrell took out the first round of the Single Track Minds Enduro Series with a win in the 4 hour held at Jorgensen Park, Kalamunda on the 1st of April. Rhianna held off challenges from a talented Solo Women's field including Mel Webb and Simone McCallum to take home first place.

Rhianna's race winning bike is the Rocky Mountain Element 70RSL, a full carbon frame with 100mm of suspension travel handled by Fox Forks and Shocks. The only customisation has been the inclusion of Shimano's XT race wheelset and 160mm centrelock rotors rolling on Maxxis Crossmark tubeless tyres.

Another great result on the day was Chris Fisher and Dave Nairn of Delta BA Racing / Rocky Mountain Bicycles finishing in 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Solo Men's category.

Chris is currently racing on the Rocky Mountain Vertex 990RSL carbon fibre 29er. His XL size bike weighed in under 10kg including tubeless tyres!

A big congratulations must also go to John Carney of Single Track Minds for running another great event. He certainly gets the most out of Jorgensen Park considering it is not a regular MTB location. Also well done to all the punters who came out and made the atmosphere so inviting and enjoyable, endurance racing in WA is going from strength to strength because of your participation.
